LPHES History (1930s - present)
LPHES was founded by Ancel Keys, who was recruited from the historic Harvard Fatigue Laboratory in 1948. Keys' notable contributions in the LPHES include the well-known Minnesota Semi-Starvation Study during World War II. Today, led by Li Li Ji, Ph.D., (also School of Kinesiology director), the LPHES continues to follow the vision of its founders by consistently producing leading-edge research related to exercise and health and preparing competent research professionals to guide the increasingly prominent field of exercise physiology into the future. The largest exercise study ever funded by the NIH, the HERITAGE Family Study, was conducted at the LPHES and four other universities.
